I wanted something firmer than a regular mattress that I could also fold away when I needed the room. This tatami mat has been great for that. The surface feels supportive without being uncomfortable, and it looks much nicer in the room than a bulky folding mattress. I’ve been using it on a wood floor and I’m very happy with it
The biggest reason I bought this was the foldable design. I live in a smaller apartment and didn’t want something permanently taking up floor space. It folds up easily, feels sturdy when opened, and gives the room a simple Japanese-style look. It’s firm, which is exactly what I expected from a tatami-style floor mat.
The mat looks really good and feels well made. I use it underneath my floor bedding and it gives me the firm base I was looking for. Just keep in mind that this isn’t a soft mattress, so if you prefer a plush sleeping surface you’ll probably want something on top of it. For my setup, it works really well.
We turned a small extra room into a flexible guest space and this was exactly what we needed. When guests are here we open the mat and use it as the base for the sleeping area, and when they leave we can fold everything away again. It keeps the room from feeling crowded and looks much more intentional than an air mattress.
I originally bought this because I liked the Japanese-inspired style, but I ended up appreciating how practical it is too. The woven surface gives the room a calm, natural look and the folding panels make it easy to move or store. It feels stable on the floor and doesn’t look cheap or flimsy.
I’ve been moving away from thick mattresses and wanted to try a more traditional floor setup. This gives me a much firmer base and helps keep the sleeping area simple. It took me a couple of nights to get used to the firmness, but now I prefer it. I also like that I can fold it up during the day.
